Do you still remember what day it is? Does it even matter?
We’re bringing SKATEISM’s Week in Review back as a public service to help you keeping track of the days!
Words by Maria Lima
At first, it seemed challenging to sum up this week’s skateboarding highlights. Most of the action going on at the moment, I watch through a screen being buried under large amounts of pillows and comforting blankets. But things actually keep happening.
I’m surprised and amazed to see the adaptation skills of the skateboarding community. Who would have thought that a pandemic would be a great time for sitting down and thinking in new ways to connect and expand our communities? Let’s use this time to get organized, people!
I’ve never been hit with so many rad interviews and strange tricks performed on various carpets. It’s a time of desperation, yes. But even more, I think it’s proven to be a time of innovation, a time of slowness, a time of terrible DIY haircuts.
On the nutrition and health front, I can report that skaters are finally cooking their own meals! Someone please report back on why banana bread and pizza have become the emblem of this pandemic?
Lots of great stories have been shared. Here’s a few I’ve managed to remember despite being distracted by disastrous kitchen adventures and panic attacks.

Freedom Skatepark has been completed after six weeks of hard work. Ever been to Jamaica? Heard of any skateparks there? Well, now you have. This 1,000 m² skatepark was built by the Concrete Jungle Foundation team, consisting of thirty local and international volunteers. It’s the first street skatepark in the country.
The Hawk has left the Lakai nest and landed at Vans Footwear. Is it newsworthy, yes. Is it surprising, not really. Still, the cute story of Tony Hawk’s early Vans memories deserves a read.
The friendly Swede (I don’t know him, is he actually friendly? He looks nice) Simon Källkvist shows us his idea of dancing in the clip “Obsan”. I’m confused half of the time I’m watching him skate. What is he doing? Which way is he spinning? Great feel-good clip from the local spot.
@suminaynay content! Need I say more? Alexis Sablone and New York City are like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich – truly made for each other. Always inspiring to watch. In this video, she talks about her creative process and what it’s like having a job you actually enjoy doing. I also really appreciated the tre flip and sidewalk cruise. Stay safe New York!
In other news Shin Sanbongi is now pro for Polar Skateboards. It took a minute for it to happen but we all knew it was coming. Very well deserved! Check out his wicked surfing.

If you’re more of a podcast kind of grrrl check out the first episode of “Squeezing The Juice“. The podcast is hosted by Kim Woozy & Ashley Masters and this episode’s guest is none other than Vanessa Torres. I personally loved the part about instruments.
And lastly I want to give a big shout to There Skateboards for being amazing. They recently posted Dana Jeck’s “bless your heart” part and it’s so sick. A lot of familiar Copenhagen spots and also a really perfect Alex G track.
