The Simpsons isn’t perhaps the best source of values but it sure is entertaining. After all, the producers are great fortune-tellers! So when Lisa Simpson said, “I’m glad I’m a girl and I’m glad I’m good at math!” while I researched this W-I-R, I knew that was my cue. In that episode, Lisa has to present as a boy to attend math classes because “maths are for men” in the newly gender-divided school. She ends up winning the prize for outstanding achievement in Mathematics and reveals her identity on stage. But it’s 2020 and while men are still prioritized, there are growing opportunities for womxn. This weeks’ news for womxn in the skateboarding community clearly demonstrate that. With video parts, new team riders, pro boards and much more, they are leading the game.

We are starting off with the latest episode of Not Here By Luck. This time around, the series follows British skater Rianne Evans around Bristol and London. She discusses how she first got into skateboarding and her experience with the community before finding her friends. The video is yet another nice installment to the series both story and aesthetically wise. The NHBL series is a project launched by Nike SB looking at different womxns’ journeys in skateboarding. You can find more the NHBL videos here and some of the features skaters in our Aphrodite Tour video in collaboration with Nike SB.
Another cool video that dropped this week is the Monster Energy Altitude Sickness edit featuring Lizzie Armanto. If you like transition this is a must-watch for both the beautifully smooth transition parks and the jaw-dropping tricks and air times. It is for sure true to its name. Also, I don’t know about you, but once all that lockdown is done, I going to Colorado!

Edits dropping weren’t the only cool things happening for womxn in skateboarding this week. Shanae Collins got on Krux and it seems like the perfect fit. When I think of Krux the words coming to mind are fun, carefree, style. If you don’t think Sheezy is all that and much more, I advise you to watch more of Collins’ content.

It wouldn’t be a proper week in review if I didn’t mention what hyped me the most this week. Cher Strauberry got a guest pro board on There Skateboards and it’s absolutely gorgeous. More than being a beautiful board designed by Jeffrey Cheung, there is something undeniably satisfying and uplifting to see people from the LGBTQ+ community thrive and succeed. Something that Leo Bañuelos and I discussed in a recent interview on the There’s Euro Trip edit. You can show your support to Cher and There here.

Pappalardo’s work always seeks an insightful and critical approach and this one doesn’t miss the mark. Talking of Villa Villa Cola, be on the lookout for a special interview with Lisa Whitaker by Maria Lima coming out soon!
Finally, 7 Hills premiered their film on the Amman skatepark in Jordan on May 29. This also marked the launch of their crowdfunding event to support their community initiative providing a secure space for youth from all backgrounds. The 7 Hills film is a beautiful piece showing the power skateboarding can have for anyone, regardless of gender.
