This is Paving Space. The sculpture project that’s subverting how we see skateboarding’s role in art.
Carhartt WIP, Isle Skateboards and Raphael Zarka came together to bring Paving Spaces to Protein Studios, Shoreditch. Opened on 17th November, this sculpture show makes us think twice about how spaces and skateboarding interact.
A series of three dimensional art pieces occupy the space — the brainwork of Nick Jensen, Carhartt and artist and skater Raphael Zarka — in a silent, modern exhibition-style format. Look closer, and you’ll see the telltale marks of any skate obstacle in our favourite spots. Wax marks, scratches. But it’s skate sculpture.
