What was the first, and last trick you learned?
First: Nollie backside shuvit
Last: halfcab 5-0 revert in a bowl today
You’ve been on Toy Machine for a while now. Who do you say on that team is an inspiration for you, both on the board and off?
I’d have to say Ed has been a huge inspiration to me on and off the board. I’ve learned so much from Ed. he’s like a big brother in a lot of ways I guess… I also really like Daniel Lutheran. He’s my favorite skater.
Any words on the new Toy vid?
It should be getting going here in the next few months. some of the guys are still working on some big video projects like the Vans video etc…
Hardest/most fun trick in a part?
Depends on the part… I’d have to say in ride the sky I had an ally oop fakie 5-0 cab out on a ledge somewhere in Canada. I just remember being really happy that day. It wasn’t really super hard but I was having fun for sure.
I saw you’ve released an album or two. Where you always a musician, or was it something that happened later in your life?
Yep, putting out a new one on the 3rd of June. (Calico Romeo) I started playing guitar when I was 10 or 11. I didnt start writing songs till around 2006 when my wife and I put out ‘Cats are my Friends’
What is your favorite instrument to play, and to hear in a piece of music?
I can play a few instruments but I really just love the guitar. There are so many different ways to play it. My favorite instrument to hear in a piece of music would have to be either the pedal steel or the cello.
Favorite group/singer-songwriter?
It doesnt get much better than Lennon/McCartney…
Besides that I also like elliott smith, girls, jesus and the mary chain, the beach boys (brian wilson), john fahey, paul simon, nick drake, and rev gary davis to name a few.
Do you get frustrated if other people give you s**t for your beliefs just because it clashes with the “skateboarder” image?
Part of what I believe is not caring about what people feel/say about what I believe. I’ll admit sometimes its hard but I try not to take myself too seriously.
What’s a typical day like for you?
There is no such thing as a typical day for me because I sometimes feel like I am a juggling clown in the circus that is my life… Although I make it a goal of mine to try and skate and work on writing songs everyday.
Any words of wisdom to the younger skaters out there?
Be humble. no one likes a pretentious goon. Be counterculture but dont fall for all the negative bullshit that people use to make themselves seem cool or “edgey” ……. If you are trying to make it in skating, being good at skating is only half of getting sponsored. Be positive.
