George Gray, cofounder of Smugglers Skate Shop in North Walsham, UK, spoke to Skateism about his favourite tunes to skate.
“I don’t usually listen to music when I skate. On occasion some heavy hardcore shit to get my blood racing like one of those times where I need to numb all thoughts of rationality. However music is one of the most important parts of my life. Nothing comes close to the feeling of discovering a new gem. Punk rock has always been for breakfast, and I am never ashamed for it. I think punk has helped me keep an open mind and always hunt for something fresh and something new.
1. Charles Bradley – Stay Away
Covers are often something I avoid, rarely do you find a cover that lives up to an original. However, Charles Bradley’s ‘Stay Away’ blew my mind. I first heard it not knowing it was a cover of Nirvana’s own ‘Stay Away’, and I have been genuinely toying with the belief it may be better. This version seems so raw and full of some dark emotions, I could listen to it everyday for the rest of my life and swear it will never grow old.
2. Moon Zooz (Moon Hooch & Too Many Zooz)
This Moon Zooz track has just been such a large part of my life recently. Played many times in the shop and just gets me thinking of all the festival fun to be had in the next few months. Fucking great two bands. Needs to be partied to so hard!
3. Turbowolf – Let’s Die
When I am not skating or working, I can’t think of anything better to do than head to one of norwich gorgeous music venues, and If I wasn’t heading down the route I am at the moment with the shop and my uni work, being involved in a music venue would be an absolute dream.
4. The Wytches – Crying Clown
Turbowolf and The Wytches, the energy from these two bands just blew me away. I have travelled many places to see these guys live. Also great for a Pre skate sound, and bringing back all that teenage angst.
5. Timber Timbre – Curtains?!
I have always valued my fathers judgement on music, It is something that has brought us closer of the years. Introducing me to great music from a young age, and taking me to some fantastic gigs when I was still too young to go alone. Recently we have been listening to a lot of Timber Timbre. I can’t really say much about them as they are still fairly new to me but whatever they do they do it well.
Thanks George,
Keep pushing...
